We all know that budgies aren’t suitable pets for beginners, and that they have very specific husbandry requirements. Despite this, perhaps because they are relatively affordable, they are often viewed as ‘low maintenance’ pets. This can lead to budgies being kept in inadequate housing, with poor nutrition and ill health, and a reduced lifespan. New – Caring for Budgies
Our budgie care guide video includes information on housing requirements, diet and monitoring health. While the script obviously can’t cover everything in depth, it serves as an important starting point in educating clients, and getting them thinking about appropriate budgie husbandry.
The video highlights:
- Housing: Most of the budgie cages in pet shops are much too small. Our video gently suggests that outdoor aviaries are ideal. We then go on to highlight the importance of space for indoor budgies, how a budgie would live in the wild and then list some key housing requirements, such as:
-> room for stretching their wings,
-> perches (ideally natural fruit tree perches),
-> food,
-> water (for drinking plus a shallow dish for bathing),
-> budgie-safe toys,
-> non-toxic, zinc free and horizontal bars,
-> ultraviolet light, and
-> daily exercise.
- Diet: Many of the budgie seed mixes on offer will lead to selective feeding of highly palatable, high fat seeds, resulting in nutritional deficiencies. Our video recommends good quality, complete pellet diets complimented with small amounts of budgie-safe fresh fruit and vegetables.
- Health: We all know that symptoms of illness in budgies are usually subtle to begin with. This means that, sadly, by the time owners notice an issue, it is often too late. We outline the key symptoms that owners should look out for, and direct them to contact their vet if they have any concerns at all. The video also educates owners on the importance of an annual health check for budgies, since we know that most budgie owners aren’t aware that this is recommended or necessary.
